Adventure in the heart of Kalnik
People come to Kalnik for its mountain and climbing trails, spectacular cliffs and historical fortresses, an environment that invites them to an active holiday.
In recent years, Kalnik has become one of the favorite destinations for excursions or multi-day stays. The entire region is dominated by Mount Kalnik, whose rocks (popularly called “teeth”) rise above the Križevci plain and look like a wall separating two worlds.
However, the numerous hiking trails on Veliki and Mali Kalnik (there are two Kalnik mountains) are of different difficulty levels, so everyone will find something to suit them – routes for easy walks or sport climbing.
Climbing routes are set right next to the remains of the Old Town of Veliki Kalnik—a fortress built almost into the rock.
From cycling tours through vineyards and Obreška wine cellars, to equestrian adventures in Križevci, to traditional delicacies such as ponakliči and pociglenjki.
You can also cycle from the Kalnički Podgorje into the valley. Numerous cycling trails are perfect for enjoying nature or for sightseeing in Kalnički, such as the trail that passes by the old, traditionally built Obreška wine cellars in Vukovec.
Križevci, although a small town, can boast the title of one of the oldest towns in continental Croatia. There are several equestrian clubs in this town, and visitors can visit a well-maintained riding arena or even sign up for a riding course.
To round off your stay in the Kalnički region, we recommend trying a traditional dish that has been passed down orally for centuries – ponakliči or pociglenjki. This trademark of the Križevci and Kalnički gastronomic offer is eaten as a hot appetizer or as a dessert.
