The land between two rivers
Discover vineyards overlooking four countries, lakeside promenades, and the charm of old mills on the Mura.
The northernmost Croatian region is located between two large rivers, the Drava and the Mura, and offers a wealth of places for excursions, spending time in nature, exploring the rich cultural heritage, or tasting quality wines and gourmet specialties.
In Međimurje, there is Lake Dubrava, the largest artificial lake in Croatia, which is best visited at Marina Prelog due to the long promenade along the shore.
An unmissable stop in Međimurje is the attractive Mađerkin breg with a newly built lookout. From the top of this hill, whose stepped vineyards complete the impression, in good weather the view reaches as many as four countries - Slovenia, Hungary, Austria and Slovakia. In addition to catering facilities, this facility also has a souvenir shop and a selection of wines from Međimurje winemakers.
Very close is Žabnik, where you can find the picturesque Mlin na Muri. There is also an educational trail next to it, designed to bring visitors closer to the colorful world of plants and animals along the river.
Stories from Međimurje: Gold, History and Wine Tradition
Educational content can also be found in the visitor center Med dvemi vodami. This multiple award-winning interactive exhibition will amaze you with stories about the rich nature of Međimurje and the people of this region.
How to pan for gold and what medieval dungeons looked like can be explored by visiting the Treasury of Međimurje. This is a newly renovated part of the Old Town of Čakovec that has prepared an exhibition about the intangible heritage of Međimurje.
The story of Međimurje, even this short one, cannot be completed without mentioning good wines. The ancient Romans recognized that the hills of Međimurje are ideal for growing grapes, and the rich offer of the Međimurje Wine Road even today, millennia later, proves that they were right.
