The Kupa River, a natural border between Croatia and Slovenia, is a river that brings life and creates a fairytale-like landscape its 292 kilometers of flow.
Its source is located in Risnjak National Park, near the village of Razloge on the slopes above the Kupa, in a karst spring at a depth of about 80 meters. It makes its way to the surface through numerous channels and canyons before joining the Sava River near Sisak. In addition to forming a natural border with Slovenia for 113 kilometers, it also marks the regional boundary between Europe and the Balkan Peninsula. The Kupa is therefore the longest river that both originates and ends within the territory of Croatia and is the third longest river in the country.

The Valley of Butterflies a magical world around the source of the Kupa
The source of the Kupa, along with its immediate surroundings, represents one of the most interesting natural sites within the National Park. This area was declared protected on December 12, 1963, and covers about 10 hectares. The source of the Kupa River is considered one of the strongest and deepest karst springs in Croatia, and its hydrographic characteristics still represent an intriguing scientific mystery of karst relief.
At an altitude of approximately 321 meters, the source forms an impressive pool of turquoise, green-blue color, whose visual impression leaves a strong aesthetic impact on visitors. The surroundings of the spring are characterized by preserved nature, rich vegetation, and specific geomorphological forms typical of karst areas.
The upper course of the Kupa River is particularly distinguished by its exceptional biological diversity. Due to the large number of butterfly species that inhabit this area, it has been named the “Magical Valley of Butterflies,” further emphasizing its natural and ecological value.
Goranska House of Knowledge a guardian of stories about life in the mountains
The Goranska House of Knowledge is located in an old village school and preserves the history and memories of the village of Razloge and its descendants. This center tells visitors the story of wooden shingles, a construction material characteristic of Gorski Kotar that is today mostly made by retired foresters; it introduces them to the rural architecture of a typical Gorski Kotar settlement; to handicrafts and basket weaving; to pastures and beekeeping. The center also presents three animals: the elusive hunter lynx, the largest European wild cat and the symbol of Risnjak National Park; the wolf, a symbol of wilderness and the largest member of the dog family; and the massive solitary bear, the largest land predator. All of them are important to understand in order to help protect them.

The path to the source a hiking trail through the Krašićevica canyon
The village of Razloge, located on the slopes above the source of the Kupa River, can be reached via the Crni Lug – Gerovo road. After Malo Selo, it is necessary to turn right onto a narrow asphalt road which, after approximately eight kilometers, leads to the village. In Razloge there is a parking area and an information point, while the hiking trail to the source begins not far from the Goranska House of Knowledge visitor center.
At first, the trail descends gently and then more steeply toward the source of the Kupa, passing through the Krašićevica canyon. Although the canyon is mostly passable, during periods of heavy rainfall or spring snowmelt the water level can rise, making access to the source only a few minutes away from that point more difficult.
Basic trail characteristics:
• Walking time: about 35 minutes
• Starting elevation: 550 m
• Destination elevation: 321 m
• Elevation difference: −229 m
• Total length: 1820 m
• Difficulty: moderately difficult
• Accessibility: year-round (spring, summer, autumn, winter)
Kupa a paradise for anglers throughout all seasons
The Kupa River is one of the most well-known and most attractive fishing rivers in Croatia. It is known for its green waters, rich fish stock, and diverse terrain that provides good conditions for various types of fishing. Along its course, from the village of Levkušje all the way to Karlovac and further downstream, quality spots can be found for catching pike, catfish, carp, zander, and various species of white fish such as roach, nase, chub, and bream.
A particularly interesting area is located in Karlovac, where during winter a large wintering ground of white fish forms between the bridges, attracting many anglers who use telescopic rods and float fishing techniques. After winter, the fish disperse downstream again, and good fishing locations can be found near settlements such as Gradac, Vodostaj, Donje Mekušje, Brođani, and Rečica.
Spring is the time for active pike fishing, summer is most favorable for catfish and carp, while autumn again brings excellent conditions for pike. Catfish are successfully caught using methods such as spinning, bottom fishing, or clonk fishing, while carp are most often caught by waiting on the bottom with prior groundbaiting. Although fishing from the bank is possible, many anglers consider boat fishing significantly more effective, as it allows for finding the best positions and easier access to parts of the river that are difficult to reach from the shore. For this reason, the Kupa represents an attractive destination for both recreational and experienced anglers.
